Newcastle’s giant step towards the Champions League

Newcastle have been in the Champions League place for most of the season.

But after Liverpool found their form and won seven straight league games while Newcastle dropped points here and there, Jürgen Klopp’s team slowly but surely came from behind.

Therefore, Thursday’s game against Brighton was extra important for Newcastle. Victory there and a place in next season’s Champions League would be very, very close.

Once the match started, it was Newcastle who were the hotter team. The home team lined up positions in the beginning of the match.

But when Newcastle finally scored the first goal of the night, it was a Brighton player who was last on the ball.

Wilson punctured the match

Deniz Undav was supposed to head away a corner, but instead of heading the ball away from his own goal, he slotted it into it to make it 1-0 to Newcastle.

2-0 also came after a set situation, this time via a free kick from the right. Kieran Trippier sent the ball into the penalty area where centre-back Dan Burn, who came to Newcastle from Brighton, headed in 2-0 for the home team.

The game ended 4–1 to Newcastle after Callum Wilson punctured the game in the 89th minute. A minute later, Bruno scored the last goal of the match after a set-up by Wilson.

Alexander Isak started the match but was replaced during extra time.

With the victory, Newcastle have now played a total of 69 points in the Premier League. Chasing Liverpool have 65 and both teams have two games left to play.

Thus, it is enough for Newcastle to win one of their remaining games, against Leicester and Chelsea, to secure a place in next season’s edition of the Champions League.
