1–1 was the score after the first semi-final of the Europa League between Juventus and Sevilla. On Thursday, it would be decided on Spanish soil, and the event would be dramatic.
The first half ended goalless. But after 20 minutes in the second, it was time for the first goal of the match. Dusan Vlahovic stood for a fine solo performance when he brought the ball to a good position and then finished with an ice-cold chip.
The home crowd was silenced, but only minutes after the lead goal would be allowed to cheer. The receipt was also a delicacy. Suso cut in with his west foot two meters outside the penalty area. The hit was perfect and the ball was untouchable.
Erik Lamela hero for Sevilla
Sevilla then pressed for a decisive goal, but Juventus goalkeeper Szczesny made a couple of really sweaty saves. The extension was a fact. It would be a real nail biter.
But after five minutes it was time for the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán stadium to explode again. Erik Lamela was correctly positioned in the penalty area and headed the ball past Szczesny. Juventus then poured on, and would be helped by the referee who showed his second yellow card to Sevilla’s Alucna who was forced off the pitch.
But despite one more man, Juventus was goalless in extra time.
Sevilla is thus ready for the Europa League final. There, the Spaniards face West Ham, who defeated Dutch AZ Alkmaar with a total of 3–1. National team member Jesper Karlsson played 85 minutes for his Alkmaar before being replaced.
Sevilla is thus ready for its tenth final in the Europa League. The last title was taken by the Spanish team in 2020, after victory against Inter in the final.
